headcanoning that in a clown species harlequins are a subspecies that develops thick calloused scab like pseudo shells that give the darker half mask appearance that regularly molts before mating season.I see the main breeds of harlequin are the ones with all black/dark half masks and the Venetian breed with brighter moasic colourful scabbing.
